Customisation

First, you need to ensure that the size of the VNC session is comfortable to you. We recommend using the full screen. Usually, the VNC session is set up with a size of 800 x 600, which may be small for you. Here are the steps:

  1. Make sure that you know your VNC session number
  2. Login to psyclogin via SSH (syntax: ssh username@psyclogin.rhul.ac.uk)
  3. Stop VNC session:
    vncserver -kill :[session number]
  4. Start new VNC session with desired size:
    vncserver :[session number] -geometry [width]x[height]

For HD (1920×1080) screens most of you have, we recommend size of 1920×1010 to allow a small space for the toolbar of the VNC client program and the operating system. Depending on your desktop settings, you may want to use smaller or larger height; so you may need to experiment with it by repeating steps 3 and 4.

The [home directory]/.bashrc file is executed each time you open a shell, so it can be used to customise the shell environment.

  • You can add aliases, shortcuts to longer/compound commands.
  • You can also pre-configure software, so you do not have to configure them manually. For that, you only have to add the corresponding configuration command(s) to the end of the file. Some configuration scripts generate output in the Terminal, which may cause issue for data transfer via SFTP. To suppress output (:!:highly recommended), add » /dev/null to the end of the command line. E.g.:
    source /usr/local/apps/psycapps/config/fsl_bash >> /dev/null
  1. Open Mozilla Firefox web browser (small icon on the top) and type - https://psycmatlab.rhul.ac.uk:10000
  2. Login using your usual RHUL username and password
  3. Click on “Others” from left panel
  4. Then you should see two options for managing the storage spaces MRIArchive and MRIWork
  5. To change permission of a directory under the PI directory in MRIArchive or MRIWork
    1. Navigate to the directory, right click, ans seelcet “Properties” –> “Changes permissions”
    2. Set the permissions as you like. Make sure “Setgui” checkbox is checked and click change.
  6. To change ownership of a directory under the PI directory in MRIArchive or MRIWork
